Be there when a need arises
Someone searching for a service provider on Google is not necessarily ready to buy straight away. They may be comparing options, learning about the subject or forming an opinion. A page that clearly answers their question can introduce your business at exactly that moment.
Search engine optimisation, or SEO, covers the work that makes a website easier for search engines to understand and more useful for visitors: page structure, copy, internal links, speed, accessibility and the quality of its information.
SEO still requires investment
Unlike an advertising campaign, organic search results do not involve paying Google for each click. Building a good website, improving its content and keeping it up to date still takes work. Results are neither immediate nor guaranteed.
The goal is to attract relevant visits from people who may be interested in your products, services or expertise, rather than simply increasing traffic of any kind.
Start with the right pages
For a local business, a clear page for each service is often more useful than a dozen generic pages. Each one should explain the need it addresses, how the service works, what is delivered and how to get in touch.
Helpful articles then build on that foundation. They answer questions people have before buying and naturally guide readers towards the relevant service page. An article about search visibility might, for example, link to an SEO audit service.
Common mistakes to avoid
Creating near-identical pages for every variation of a keyword rarely makes for a good experience. Copying supplier descriptions, repeating the same phrases or publishing articles without useful answers does little to help visitors either.
Focus on content you would want to share with a customer: precise, easy to read, illustrated where useful and relevant to what the business actually does.
How can you measure progress?
Google Search Console shows the search queries your pages appear for, along with clicks and impressions. An analytics tool can add page views and contact enquiries to that picture, subject to the applicable privacy requirements.
Alongside “How many people visit?”, ask “Do they find what they need, and do they take the next step?”

Find the issue before rewriting your pages
Choose an important service page and review its status in Search Console. A URL discovered by Google is not necessarily indexed; an indexed page does not necessarily rank well for the searches that matter to you.
- The page is not indexed: read the stated reason and check access, content and possible restrictions before adding keywords.
- It is indexed but rarely appears: review the available queries and check whether the page addresses a precise need, with a clearly described service and audience.
- It receives impressions but few clicks: compare the search question with the page’s title and the answer it offers.
Record your observations and the date of each change. On a new website or with limited data, avoid drawing quick conclusions. Google’s Search Console guide introduces the reports that help you get started.
Build an initial journey around three useful pages
For a small service business, a connected set of pages can be a practical starting point. Consider this example for a renovation business, adapting it to the services actually offered.
| Page | Question to address | Specific information to add |
|---|---|---|
| Service | What does the renovation service include? | Scope, stages and how to request a visit |
| Advice | What should I prepare before the first meeting? | A checklist of documents and questions |
| Contact | How should I describe what I need? | A clear form and an explanation of what happens next |
Connect the pages with link labels that describe their destination. The article prepares the enquiry; the service page explains the support; the contact page enables action. Each should provide its own answer without repeating the same copy. This journey provides a foundation for SEO and content work, without guaranteeing a Google ranking.
